SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH KOMEN MISSOURI

Susan G. Komen Missouri is seeking two interns for Summer 2020 to join our team. We are looking for communications, journalism, new media, and graphic design students to help us work with us from June 2020 to early August. We offer flexible schedules and a unique opportunity to get some experience in the nonprofit sector.  

Special Events Internship – Summer 2020 

Overview 

The Special Events Intern will focus on completing projects and tasks that help engage people in the Komen Missouri mission through outstanding special events.   The intern will work alongside Komen Missouri staff and volunteer committees to plan and execute a number of events including our signature fundraiser, the More Than Pink Walk and events around Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. This is an unpaid internship opportunity that offers valuable hands-on experience in event planning and management for a well-known nonprofit organization.  Komen Missouri will gladly complete any necessary paperwork or reporting to ensure the intern receives course credit from his or her college or university. The intern reports to the Executive Director.  Work hours are flexible based on the student’s schedule and the school’s requirements for credit completion. Due to COVID-19, a reliable internet connection is required as remote work may be required.  

 Accountabilities 

The intern will work on a variety of event-related projects and be involved in numerous learning opportunities throughout the semester, which may include: 

  • Event Planning – help develop event project plans in collaboration with events committees 
  • Project Management – help oversee implementation of event project plans, executing a variety of tasks and meeting numerous deadline 
  • Assist with the identification and solicitation of sponsorships, in-kind goods and services.  
  • Help cultivate relationships with event sponsors, participants, in-kind donors, vendors and volunteers 
  • Handle a variety of pre-event logistics and day-of-event tasks including, but not limited to setup, troubleshooting, participant relations, and cleanup 
  • Help with post-event stewardship of event sponsors, participants, in-kind donors, vendors and volunteers  

Qualifications 

  • Pursuing a degree in event management, meeting planning, hospitality, marketing or related field 
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities 
  • Outstanding interpersonal, writing and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to collaborate within a team environment and work with volunteers 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Ability to work flexible hours and to carry event related items of up to 40 pounds 
  • Passion for making a difference working for a nonprofit organization

Marketing and Engagement Internship – Summer 2020 

Overview 

The Marketing and Engagement Intern will focus on completing projects and tasks that help engage people in the Komen Missouri mission by communicating powerful stories that demonstrate the impact of their charitable support.   The intern also will help publicize Komen Missouri fundraising events and share useful breast health information using a variety of communication channels. This is an unpaid internship opportunity that offers valuable hands-on experience in marketing and communication for a well-known nonprofit organization.  Komen Missouri will gladly complete any necessary paperwork or reporting to ensure the intern receives course credit from his or her college or university. The intern reports to the Executive Director.  Work hours are flexible based on the student’s schedule and the school’s requirements for credit completion. Due to COVID-19 and the current work situation, a reliable internet connection is required as this may be an exclusively remote work position.  

Accountabilities 

The intern will work on a variety of communication and marketing projects and be involved in numerous learning opportunities throughout the semester, which may include: 

  • Content Development – write and edit content for e-communications, website and social media 
  • Grantee Engagement – work with our grantees to cross-promote health fairs and mammography van events 
  • Event Support – help promote Affiliate events (including the MORE THAN PINK Walk on June 13th) 
  • Media Relations – write and edit news releases, prepare media kits, assist with media pitches 
  • Strategic Planning – help prepare, develop and implement public relations and marketing plans 
  • Project Management – handle a variety of tasks and meet multiple deadlines.  

Qualifications 

  • Pursuing a degree in communication, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interview people and use information gathered to develop compelling stories 
  • Experience with online media – social media, website, e-newsletters, etc 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, Design skills with at least basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) are a plus 
  • Adaptable, able to handle multiple tasks, willing to learn, and able to work independently and within a team 
  • Passion for making a difference working for a nonprofit organization
